Sufism in the 21st Century: The Presence of the Green Man
Weekend Workshop with Himayat Inayati
Date: January 14 – 15, 2012
Time: 10 AM – 5 PM daily
Cost: $125.00
Place: Odyssey Community School, 90 Zillicoa Street, Asheville, North Carolina 28801
Drawing on the teaching of presence and sacred relationships from the illuminative philosophy of the great Sufi masters Shihab al-Din Suhrawardi (1155-91) and Ibn al Arabi (1165-1240) and leaping forward to include the 20th & 21st century work of chemist and earth scientist James Lovelock, deep ecologist Stephan Harding and eco-theologian Father Thomas Berry, Himayat will present a weekend exploration of the gift, indeed the absolute need, of Sufism in the 21st century. There are several Sufi renderings of Khidr, the green man in the desert, the one who taught Moses and others about appropriate relationships that create, bind, nurture, and evolve the cosmos. Today, the presence of the Green Man is of critical importance! Through weaving the teachings of these Sufi masters and the post-modern work of these great pioneers of deep and emergent ecology, this weekend will open a portal of compassionate possibility in an era of ever greater alienation and destructive objectivity in human – planetary relationships. This workshop will quicken and empower a realization that every aspect of life from atoms, to the planet, to the Cosmos, is alive, sentient, and seeking personal and collective fulfillment. This weekend will explore humanity’s role in a universe that is totally alive.
